Avocado
Persea americana
A large evergreen tree that can crop in Adelaide with care. It is frost-tender and hates hot, dry wind and wet feet, so plant in spring in a warm, sheltered spot with perfect drainage, ideally on a mound. Choose a cold-tolerant variety such as Bacon or Hass and water deeply through summer.

Pets: Seriously toxic. Children: Not known to be toxic. Parts: leaves, seed, skin, bark. Persin is toxic to birds (including pet birds and backyard chooks), rabbits, horses and livestock, and can be fatal. Pet Poison Helpline lists avocado as non-toxic to dogs and cats, but the seed can block the gut. Fruit flesh is an everyday food.
