Fruit tree
Banana
Musa acuminata and hybrids
A fast-growing giant herb that fruits well in the tropics and subtropics and in warm, sheltered temperate gardens. It needs heat, rich soil and lots of water, and frost kills the leaves. Each stem fruits once. Panama disease is a serious threat, so only buy certified plants from an approved nursery and never move suckers.

Good to know
- Buy certified plants from a Quality Banana Approved Nursery (QBAN). In Queensland only buy from an approved source and check biosecurity zone rules before planting or moving banana plants
- Never take suckers from a friend's or neighbour's plant: that is how Panama disease spreads
- Keep one main stem and one or two followers per clump; cut the fruited stem down after harvest
- Bag the bunch to protect it from birds, bats and fruit-spotting bugs
Common problems
- Panama disease (Fusarium wilt, including TR4)yellowing, wilting and split stems; there is no cure. Report suspect plants to your state biosecurity agency and do not move plants or soil

If you use a garden chemical, follow the label exactly. Try organic options first, and ask the community or Plant Doctor if you're unsure.
